"Moods" di Bud Powell mette in luce l'influente pianista bebop in un momento speciale, quando divenne artista esclusivo per le etichette Norgran e Verve dell'impresario jazz Norman Granz. Tratto da tre sessioni di registrazione svoltesi nell'arco di sei mesi tra il 1954 e il 1955 (con il supporto dei bassisti George Duvivier, Percy Heath e Lloyd Trotman e dei batteristi Art Taylor e Art Blakey), l'approccio di Powell a ballate e standard come "My Funny Valentine", "Moonlight in Vermont", "You Go to My Head" e "I Get a Kick Out of You" (oltre ai brani originali "Buttercup" e "Fantasy in Blue") ci ricorda in modo toccante perché fu uno dei pianisti jazz più incisivi della sua generazione.
